Burly-Quotes 4: Miss Indigo Blue – The Twirly Girl!

It was about six years ago that I, Miss Ruby Mimosa, and Miss Indigo Blue met in Bump & Grind class at Miss Indigo Blue’s Academy of Burlesque. It was not just a few classes in that Indigo Blue reached out to Ruby and introduced her to Kitten La Rue of The Atomic Bombshells… and the rest is history.

Since their introduction, Ruby and Indigo have worked on many projects; one being the sales and distribution of her Twirly Girl pasties!

We were able to sit down and chat for a bit about her pastie company and how it all came to be. Enjoy this little snippet into creation of Twirly Girl LLC.

TBB: Can you tell me about your original design ideas behind your world traveling pasty company, Twirl Girl LLC?

IB: Well, my first experience with pasties was at Tease O Ramma in 2001. I took a pasty making class from Bonnie Dunn at Blue Angel Cabaret in New York. It was a great class, very basic fundamental construction with glue guns and felt and sequins. At that point I realized that actual construction of them wasn’t that complex, but the technology behind the tassel twirling had a lot of potential.

So, I ended up getting together with a friend of mine who was a quilter and a burning man gal. She and I, for fun really, mad a couple different designs. Our motivation was really, “We can make something awesome out of this. This could be really cool!” After we made a bunch of designs, we were like, “We could sell these…” “People want these.” And that’s how it began.

We just began evolving our designs over and over again based on how we could improve the design flaws that we found in pasties that were available on the market.

TBB: Well, they are so good, they are the best! I’ve always wanted to ask that question. Thank you for being available and willing to share. Is there anything else you want to add or share?

IB: Um, I really like the way pasties look on your boobs and now I am really excited to make you a custom pair or super pointies!

Thank you Indigo! We love you!!!

Burly-Quotes 3: Lily Verlaine

A couple weeks ago while up in the San Juan Islands with The Atomic Bombshells & Dance Belt, I got a chance to sit and have a little chat with ‘A Living, Breathing Work of Art, Miss Lily Verlaine’!
Please enjoy my delicious scoop…

The Burlesque Boutique: We were just on Lopez Island and now we are on Orcas Island (in the San Juan Islands, Wa.) on tour with the Atomic Bombshells. I am asking Miss. Lily Verlaine what is your favorite fruit?

Lily Verlaine: Well my favorite fruit today, so far, has been this gorgeous yellow plum that I plucked off a plum tree at our fantastic digs on Lopez Island. You know plums are a little bratty. They are kind of shiny, they have kind of a tart skin; but the flesh is this succulent, amazing, sweet, juicy interior. Then you can suck on the pit, and that is kind of amazing, too.

TBB: That’s dirty (laughing)!

LV: So, that’s my favorite fruit of the day (chuckles).

TBB: Well, that definitely matches your character.

LV: I have other favorite fruits in general. But, that warm plum off the plum tree is my fruit du jour. I love the summer!

TBB: And the second question I have for you is, what you are currently obsessed with?

LV: Aside from the pit of the plum…

TBB: Yes… (laughing)

LV: Well, my obsessions are kind of private.

TBB: Well, let’s just leave it at that.

LV: Yes – well, I’m currently obsessing with my meditation practice to rid myself of obsessive thinking; to tell you the truth (giggles).

TBB: Ha! That’s priceless. Thank you Miss Lily Verlaine.

LV: Thank you Miss Ruby Mimosa.

TBB: Well, we will talk to you soon and we will see you at Alice and Wonderland!

Just one more night and 2 shows left, Saturday September 15th 7pm & 10.30pm show. Find tickets here!

Burly-Quotes 2: Jennifer Dietrich of Atomic Cosmetics

Jennifer has been a scientist for her whole life. She found glitter and the rest is history. Ha! Not really.
Just a couple of weeks ago, I got to pop into her space on Capitol Hill. Jen was setting up her makeup and skin care shop on the second floor, loft area, of Retail Therapy.

TBB: Jennifer Deitrich, you are opening a shop and a makeup line called Atomic Cosmetics! Tell me about your idea within your brand.

JD: The idea is really simple! It’s to have healthy makeup and skincare. Makeup that isn’t bland or boring. You can still have glitter and fun colors and it can be healthy. There is just no reason for it to be toxic.

TBB: I love that idea! Now, what did you say earlier about being a hippie…

JD: Oh (laughs), that I shouldn’t have to wear my f**king Birkenstocks to put makeup on (laughs even louder)! My makeup should be awesome. I shouldn’t have to turn into a hippie chick to have natural cosmetics. They can be neon, or “F**k You I’m Pink” [the name of one of her hot pink lipsticks], or glitter.

TBB: Oh my gosh, yes! That is one of my new favorite colors. I’m obsessed! One more question, one that I am asking everyone, what are you currently obsessed with?

JD: (Pauses for a bit) I have too many things, I can’t think of one thing I am obsessed with.

TBB: That’s alri-

JD: (Interrupts) Oh! Glitter, obviously. Rhinestones, duh! (Chuckles) I was actually told by Jamie [Jamie Von Stratton, fabulous local costume designer and world traveling burlesque performer] that I was not allowed to fully rhinestone that picture (points to the giant Audrey Hepburn portrait that hangs on the wall of her new shop). When Jamie Von Stratton says ‘Less is More’, then you know that you are really teetering on the edge there (laughs).

TBB: You are too much (giggling)! Thank you, Jennifer. We are looking forward to seeing your shop, having you online, and in the community!

Burly-Quotes 1: Jessica Price

In this first blog series, titled Burly-Quotes, I get to turn the tables on the lovely Jessica Price. Jessica is known for her in depth interviews and blogs on local and national burlesque performers and performances. What a treat it was to switch it up and put her in the hot seat!

The Burlesque Boutique: Who has been the most exciting and/ or intimidating person that you have you interviewed for your blog (Burlesque Seattle Press)?

Jessica Price: I’d have to say, hands down, that interviewing Dita Von Tease was the most exciting! I wasn’t really nervous to talk to her, because I felt well versed in her world… I never thought I’d be having a conversation with her, from being a fan of hers from long ago and buying her pin-ups and photographs on-line. So, that was the most exciting.
As far as the most intimidating, interviewing Lily Verlaine for the first time; I was really nervous to talk to her. But, that faded [laughs] because she is so easy to talk to.

TBB: That’s so great, I love it! So my next question, what are you currently obsessed with?

JP: I am currently obsessed with a series of books called ‘Best Sex Writing’. It’s publication/ yearly book that has a collection of really good journalistic writing about sex over the last year. It could be gender based issues, erectile dysfunction, strippers, it could be whatever. It’s a really smart series, and because it’s journalism, it’s special to me.

TBB: So, is it kind of like The Stranger’s, Savage Love?

JP: It’s not really an advice thing. She (Editor Rachel Kramer Bussel) just looks for articles that are published throughout the year, by anyone. It could be a stripper talking about sex work, or a doctor writing about pharmaceuticals on ED, anything as long as it is sexual in nature. She just compiles all of these journalistic sex writings from all over the year. They’re great! They are really funny, informative and inspiring. [laughts] It makes me feel good for the future of sex writing as a career.

TBB: Totally! Well, now I wanna check them out! Thank you so much Jessica!

Later that evening… I got an email from Jessica…

Jessica Price: Another current, more personal obsession I should mention is MADONNA. I’m so excited for her upcoming Seattle dates. I’ve spent a fortune on phenomenal seats and I’m going to 3 shows (2 here and 1 in Vancouver) because she’s just that good live. In a weird twist of ‘when obsessions collide’, both Madonna and Dita Von Tease released perfumes this year…? I’m just saying…

The Burlesque Boutique: You are a hoot! Thanks Jessica!

Jessica Price writes for Burlesque Seattle Press, Seattle Gay News, and The Stranger.
